OMG this book is only 400 pages and I don't know if I can force myself to finish it! It's like wading through Roxanne's desert only to end up ... well I'm not going to spoil it for those who choose to plow through.
What has happened good editors? Have blue pencils gone the way of the typewriter? I'm three quarters of the way through and have lost all interest in the generations of unbelievable characters. I must admit I'm not a big fan of magical realism, maybe that accounts for my flagging interest.
I'm not opposed to long books. I am a huge fan of well written, well edited books regardless of their length, in fact I just reread "Ahab's Wife" as a break from "The Road ..." OMG I've already forgotten the title of this boring book ... guess that says it all.

Eh, it is was ok storyline and got a little wordy with its descriptions. But I did finish it.
A book full of beauty and tragedy. It flowed like a Sony. I have never read anything like this, which is really why I liked It so much. It's a keeper!
Fascinating tale of a sprawling Iranian family before and during the reign of the Shah, "Moonlight..." is a constellation of real people and people imbued with Nahai's magical realism. A worthy, if somewhat baroque read. I much preferred Caspian Rain,
A sort of rambling story that takes us from reality into fantasy while traveling from Iran to the US. Problem is, the story rambled on and off the point, and in the end, all but two of the characters weren't fully drawn. I like the idea of this book more than the book itself.
This is a brilliant magical-realistic novel about the journey of an Iranian Jewish family from the ghetto in Tehran to ultimately Los Angeles. A bit of flying is involved. It has depth of character along with strange events and even stranger characters and yet, ultimately, under or through all the strangeness they are intimately recognizable.
This is the second time I have read this book. The first time was before I had my children and was looking at life differently. This time I read each page (especially the converstions of Maryam and Lili) over and over. I understand and appreciate this book. Jina Nahai is an Iranian born woman and so am I. This gives me a better understanding of the so many common areas women share with each other and bond us closer. The feelings such as guilt which was put in Roxana as a child by her grandmother, Bibi and mother Shusha and Alexander the Cat made her believe that she can not make any decision for herself. The destiny is made for her and this is what is mostly believed in Iranian culture for every body. Roxana had guilt of not being able to change her past by taking advantage of the oppurtuities life had brought her like marrying Sohrab. Even though at the end she had the chance to hear it from Maryam telling Lili and that lessened her guilt and she felt lighter (or she could have died with last drops of almond tears). Ironically her sister Tala't who nobody would have thought to have the bad luck was the shame of the family. More power to Jina and her books, I am looking forward to read her new books.
I guess you could say this is written in a kind of "magical realism" style, and done well. Sometimes it's a beautiful dream, sometimes it's very dark and you want to wake up, and the characters feel sometimes as substantial as smoke and other times as real as your Grandma Rose. It took a little while to join the author's characters in this shared dream, but once accomplished, it pulls the reader right along. I want to read another of her books.
