Red Swan A Novel P T Deutermann Books

Recently, when checking to see if author P.T. Deutermann will have a 2018 released novel (August), this reader was surprised to see that in 2017 he released “Red Swan” which was quickly ordered and read. This novel is about espionage between America and China, and the story takes place in Washington, D.C., where China has a growing number of agents attached to their embassy that are members of their Ministry of State Security (MSS).

A senior leader of the Central Intelligence Agency orders a black swan on General Chiang Liang-fu, who is the head of MSS in the United States. The general is known for having his zipper down more than he should, thus the black swan operation. A black swan is when a female operative is used to discredit a senior individual with the goal of bringing down his entire department. Melanie Sloan is the agency operator selected and she is prepared for her operation by agency shrink Dr. Preston Allender, known as Dragon Eyes, because of the unique nature of his amber eye color.

Dr. Preston and his team train Melanie well and the operation proceeds. The story is in two parts. The first part, is at times slow as the reader grinds through the details of such a CIA operation. While the operation is successful, part two of the story leads to the aftermath.

The Chinese want revenge, and the lives of Melanie and Dr. Preston are in danger. As the danger increases, so does the complexity of the story when one realizes that MSS might just have a mole implanted in the agency. Who can Dr. Preston and Melanie trust? Most certainly, however, does the tension increase on the streets of Washington as the book nears its end.

This was an enjoyable read and leaves the reader with thoughts about the growing involvement of China in American industries and universities. Still, this was just a novel. Or was it.

Red Swan A Novel P T Deutermann Books Reviews

Great plot with interesting character development. Several twists in the plot which keeps the reader on his/her toes. The author grabs you early and doesn't let you go until the end. I enjoyed this book very much.
Every time I pick up a Deutermann book there is a surprise. You never know exactly what you are going to get. This time a super thriller. Couldn't put it down. From start to finish a real roller coaster ride. Well written and fast paced it was full of surprises. Just loved it.
Well Commodore, you've done it again. Since Scorpion in The Sea, your choice of timely topics has been spot on. Islamic revenge, Israel's fight with it's neighbors, the secret war waged in Cold Frame, and now the Chinese. And the writing is crisp, the dialogue has a nice ring to it, and the story, within a story, just like the Russian doll. Wait, did I say Russia.......
I'm looking forward to your next effort.
Dave Tucker
Red Swan intrigues and puzzles from the start with meticulously masterminded CIA plot against Chinese general, the plot which leads to execution of that general back in China.
The whole book is a game between spy agencies, the fine web of intelligence operation called "the swan" where elaborately set up event starts the chain reaction which leads to unexpected but spectacular result bringing down the whole house of cards of an enemy.

I usually favor straightforward, brutal military-intelligence thrillers and Red Swan is certainly a different kind of a book where you discover layer upon layer of deception and try to understand all twists and turns of intelligence work.
And though I found certain aspects of intelligence traps described in Red Swan rather unsavoury, the plot on the whole is so finely woven that it kept me tense and guessing till the very end.
And the absolute winner is the central character, the CIA chief interrogator and nearly mind-reader Dr. Preston Allender, the man with Devil Eyes.
I had great time trying to solve the puzzle which is Red Swan and want to express my thanks to Mr.Deutermann for his wonderful book!
Deutermann is a terrific story-teller, not only about US Navy matters. "Red Swan" is a good example. Some of Deutermann's stories are better than others, but I have yet to encounter one I didn't like. His stories have this quality of staying in the reader's mind, which is something of a rarity among published fiction. The usual descriptive is page-turner, and it applies to "Red Swan."
Don't start this book if you have to get up early the next morning. The plot is very convoluted, and the suspense starts right at the beginning. There aren't too many action scenes, but those that are included are very well done. The main problem for the reader is the large number of twists and turns in the plot. Just when you think you have the good guys and the bad guys sorted out, everything changes to the opposite. This continues up to the last chapter, and carries the eager, albeit confused, reader hopelessly looking for a solution. Nevertheless, it is a fast and compelling read that should not be missed.
Deutermann, to me, is comparable to DeMille & Baldacci, and in some cases better. His military background gives him a good understanding of Washington politics, and the stab in the back methodology of operating. Having myself been there during DeMIlle's time, I'm am fully aware of how governmental organizations function. This is a very good tale of CIA operations in Washington, DC. As spy stories go, when one think's he has it figured out, another shoe drops. The reader won't get bored. This is a stand alone novel and is similar in concept to Official Privilege and Hunting Season, which I think are his best books. Deutermann is also into caves and dark places but, whereas Washington doesn't have many caves, it does have subway tunnels, which he uses to capture intensity. In any case, I always thought a Red Swan was the term for a honey trap (but in this book, its use is confusing); however, the term Black Swan, a wall street application, I found very interesting. I haven't read a book within 24 hours since 7 Days in May ( a very long time ago). This one was able to capture my interest so much so that I couldn't put it down until it was finished.
