Enjoyed. I found this garnered at least a 3.5 star from me but some of the prose was lyrical (which I enjoy), and Gist' s writing seemed elevated over the mass of "Christian romance" I have read so I gave it a 4. It was MUCH better than another of her own novels I read last year, something about a maid. This is the story of a young woman and her teenaged brother and sister, orphaned and stranded in an early, lawless San Francisco of the gold rush. Rachel and her siblings are befriended by Johnny, a gambling house owner.
I particularly liked the fact that one of the primary characters (avoiding spoilers, I won't name) never truly changes. Just like reality. The main character, Rachel, grows realistically with her challenges and pain. I wasn't as convinced about Johnny' s transformation but..... it can certainly happen. Some of the scenes were poignant and well described by the author. Much of the history that unfolds is interesting.
The level of writing, characterization, dialogue, history, all seemed to mesh well and flow well.
I recommend. Some reviewers commented on tough issues like prostitution, gambling being described. I found this was handled extremely cleanly by Ms. Gist . I am sure it was much more gritty in real life.

The Measure of a Lady Deeanne Gist 9780764200731 Books Reviews
I really have a hard time of writing the review of this book. Nothing did stand out and nothing was really bad to dismiss the book. The book was just okay. Something to pick up on small brakes or when you maybe commute by train or bus. The book was an easy read. It did hold my attention throughout the book. The writer used humor in the book, but it was not as prominent as in the book "A Bride Most Begrudging" written by the same writer. I was expecting more but do not have regrets reading it.
Once again, I could not put myself in heroine's shoes. I was somehow distant to the whole story. The writer did not dig deeper into her main characters. Also, I think that the heroine was not a realistic character.
The heroine was stubborn and described as a smart person but acted SO foolishly. The hero was likable, but I would wish for him to be more masculine. The hero pictured in my opinion was not a man that many women would want to end up with, so the romance has fallen flat for me.
The scenes were not intriguing and found some scenes too abrupt and sweet.
For people who are afraid again to pick up the book because the writer is known to write edgy fiction, I would say that the book does not contain any descriptive scenes. The writer does mention someone fantasizing about something to happen, but in my opinion she has not crossed the line.
The book is not preachy and does not reflect a valuable Christian lesson. It has fallen short of my expectations.
But the book is light and will give you relaxation you need. I would call it a funny romance because it is unbelievable but still with some humor to be enjoyable.

This is a clean, Christian romance. A bit more romance that your typical Christian romance novel, this book takes you right into the muddy streets of San Francisco during the gold rush. Research pays off here in the realistic depiction that unfolds within the pages. From history to landscape to society to the fictional lives of the character's, you are in for a treat. There are a few editing issues but nothing to annoy or slow down the reading. There is no preaching to the reader but there are strong lessons learned by the characters. There are some serious issues dealt with such as gambling, drinking, prostitution and sexual temptation. An interesting book that I will add to my reread collection and visit again in the future.
Definitely a favorite of mine. Yes, I did get annoyed with the protagonist on occasion because she was so stubborn in her ways, but I understood where she was coming from and her struggle to stay moral in a place where morals seem inconsequential. Many of the errors/challenges Rachel made or faced came from inexperience and naiveté, which she would soon come to recognize and strived to problem solve in the best way she knew how. I don't have any scruples with the writing/characters themselves because I feel they are well written and designed to be flawed just like we all are; any frustration I have is with Rachel's inconsistency and mixed signals she sent regarding her love interest, which I feel is a very human, youthful mistake. In light of all that I've said, I enjoyed seeing the characters grow and appreciated how the author concluded the story. If you like this book or Romance/Historical Fiction in general, I strongly recommend Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, or anything by Karen Witemeyer.
The history of the California gold rush and the influx of people during that period made a great backdrop to this story. Although, not truly a backdrop, as these characters were front and center. This is a perfectly imperfect story, in that Rachael is striving to live a godly life in an unholy place, but she was never taught about mercy. Growing up in a society where rigid rules of what is proper were enforced, she is unprepared when she and her siblings are abandoned in a place without those strictures. She has to turn to God for His wisdom, when what she thought were firm foundations in her life are shaken to the core. And Johnnie, a former missionary, has walked away from his faith and is making his livelihood as a bar owner and gambler. The last thing he wanted was to fall in love with a pious "bonnet". Man makes plans and God smiles.
