I just can’t love these books. First, I get that these aren’t bodice rippers, but sometimes the lack of passion bothers me. Nora Roberts always manages to make Roarke and Dallas’s relationship hot even though they’re married. Merit and Ethan just teeter near passion.
Secondly, the novels seem to be devolving one step above a YA novel. The mess with GP, the rationing of blood, determining if Cadogan is allowed to remain in the club etc smacks of the Ministry of Magic invading Hogwarts. It’s childish and beneath the badasses these characters purport to be. The whole thing is corporate vampirism.
Third, I’m bored. There are endless discussions about deep-dish pizza and dessert. Stupid comments about sex that again smacks of a sorority house. I get that Merit is 28, but some of these folks are 200. When do they plan to grow up.?
I just need more.

**Warning This review will contain spoilers for previous books!!!***

Merit has been forced to come into her own as Sentinel of the Cadogan House vampires. During her short stint as Sentinel, she has found many friends and enemies. A new threat will not hurt her loved ones, but all of Chicago and beyond. Will she be able to stave off this new threat?

This newest book takes off from where Drink Deep ends. Truth by said, it took a moment for me to become oriented, but when the gnome kicked Merit in the shin, I think the whole story became clear. You think I jest!

Merit is the woman we have grown to love, complete with all of the snarky stubbornness we expect. She's in the middle of everything and trying to save the world. But, she's a bit different after Ethan's death (or whatever you call it). She's become softer and can more easily express her feelings. A little bit. Baby steps, right?

As with all of the Chicagoland series, the book is plot-centric where the characters are second to the story. Luckily, the characters keep stealing the show through the drama of the plot, leaving the reader cheering or chagrinned throughout the book.

This book focuses on Mallory and her addiction. Plus, there is an old enemy that appears, but is not what he appears. I liked this twist in the plot, even if the good versus bad gets a bit muddled in the meantime. Honestly, I believe this confusion is on purpose and does play a role in the overall plot of the book and series.

Biting Cold does not leave fans disappointed. After a few "what the hell" moments experienced in previous books, Biting Cold sticks to the straight and narrow without any leaps of faith. Hence, readers will appreciate the story complete with a few twists and turns. Most importantly, the main characters remain solid, even if a bit more sensitive, which keeps the readers enthralled. This book is a definite must for readers of this series.

Well, to be honest, this was better than a lot of the previous stories, but.....

In my review on Drink Deep, as a reader I had gotten fed up with knowing how to solve many of their problems, yet no one could come up with the answers in the book?

The answers were so simple and so easy, but everyone decided that wallowing, complaining and just plain not cluing in was much better then taking action.

In Drink Deep, I had said all they needed to do was pick up the phone and alert the media that not only were there vamps and shifters, but there were many many other supernaturals as well, thus taking the heat off Cadogan house and the vampires.

Gee, why picket and hoot and holler about vampires when you can stalk nymphs and throw rocks at trolls? Cadogan house was overwhelmed with paparazzi, rioters, picketers and just idiots out to find trouble, but hey....make an anonymous phone call and tell the media that there's a whole laundry list of sups out there.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Thing is, it doesn't happen until this installment, but all the seriously bright, smart and ambitious guards and the sentinel herself, should have come up with this an entire book ago.
